This is possibly the biggest set of changes we have ever made in a single month, so buckle up for today’s Patch Notes!
We rebuilt the home page — why, and what you’ll notice
Our old Home Page worked like Lego pieces. When you opened the page, our server had to fetch the correct pieces and prepare the assembly instructions for the entire page — and then your browser had the job of putting the final page together.
This is especially punishing for slower devices and can lead to some odd situations while the browser is assembling everything, such as things temporarily being out of place or popping onto the screen.
We are migrating to a new architecture where, in this metaphor, the server delivers the page fully assembled, so your browser does not have to do any additional work. This means a much faster and more reliable experience.
It also allows the server to deliver assembled blocks gradually, without blocking the rest of the page. Previously, to build the “assembly instructions,” the server had to wait until all the required information was available. Now, the server can send each block as soon as it is ready – which means a faster page load.
This new world of possibilities is especially exciting for item pages, where each card needs its own set of data and it does not make sense for the entire page to wait for the Related Items card to load. We have not migrated item pages yet, but they are the next target.
